THE SEDIMENT SAMPLING STATION IS LOCATED AT THE ASHLEY RIVER AND IS OUTSIDE THE BOUNDARIES OF FORT SUMTER NATIONAL MONUMENT. THE DATA ARE FROM A REPORT BY THOMAS D. MATHEWS OF THE MARINE RESOURCES RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN CHARLESTON SC; "METALS AND POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS IN THE CHARLESTON HARBOR ESTUARY; SOUTH CAROLINA;" AND WERE ALSO PUBLISHED AS CHAPTER 11 IN "A PHYSICAL AND ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE CHARLESTON HARBOR ESTUARINE SYSTEM." THE STUDY WAS FUNDED UNDER GRANT #NA87AADCZ 068 THROUGH THE SOUTH CAROLINA COASTAL COUNCIL; AND WAS CONDUCTED IN ORDER TO "TARGET SEDIMENT SAMPLES AS LONGTERM INDICATORS OF POLLUTION" AND TO DOCUMENT ANTHROPOGENIC INPUTS OF METALS AND POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS TO THE ESTUARY.
